Japanese Acupuncture, Needle Head Moxibustion

Needle Head Moxibustion

Musculoskeletal problems are some of the most common disorders many acupuncturists see in clinic. Most practitioners know that effective treatments can be performed by needling ahshi points locally and distally along the meridian. What many practitioners don’t know, is how beneficial the addition of needle head moxibustion to these points can be. It is particularly useful for joint pain of the elbows, knees, ankles, all forms of lower back pain and most muscular strain.

The heat from the moxa is transferred directly through the needle and into the muscle or joint, rather than dispersing over a wide area as occurs when using stick moxa. Patients often describe a deep feeling of warmth that they have never experienced before.

Using this kind of deep heat has the effect of moving stagnation and promoting healing. It is a more tonifying way to disperse and often eliminates the need for lift, twist and thrust style needling. Simply needling down to the point of resistance and leaving the needle with moxa is enough stimulation. Patients feel more comfortable and often experience faster results as a result of this simple technique. In addition to this the modern form of moxa used is a smokeless charcoal that sits in a basket on the needle. Allowing this technique to be used in clinics that don’t have an exhaust system.

Needle head moxibustion is one of the most useful tools we can use in clinic for helping people regain their health and I recommend anyone that is interested in continued acupuncture education equip themselves with this wonderful technique that has been utilized traditionally for centuries.
